The Tamil Language Society had its beginnings in March, 1975, with the visit of the renowned Tamil writer, Agilan, to Singapore. Dr. Veeramani, Mr Samy, and Mr Rajagopal who were then students in the varsity, felt that Mr Agilan should be invited to visit the varsity and honored. There was, however, no individual society in the varsity, which could offer this invitation. As such, Dr. Veeramani and his colleagues taking the initiative successfully organized a private tea party to welcome the author and exchange thoughts about Singapore and Singaporean Tamil Literature. After this event, efforts were made to establish a society in the varsity for the advancement of Tamil.
In order to promote bilingualism, and in order to innovate the literary heritage of Tamil writings in Singapore, and so help the nation in promoting one of the official languages enshrined in its constitution, it was agreed by all that the Tamil Language Society should be founded in the University of Singapore, not only to cater for academic and literary pursuits but also to inculcate at least amongst those who came within the ambit of the Society the spirit of sacrifice and service to the well being of Singapore. Within a month of its formulation, the Society organized the Freshman Tea in 1975, and for the first time in the history of the University of Singapore's Rag & Flag Day, it put up a colorful float, depicting the ancient Tamil epic, "Chillappattikaram".In order to establish monuments out of projects, rather than organize functions as done by any normal students society, the Society decided on a 'Seminar Conference on Tamil Language and Tamil Literature in Singapore', and annual academic journal by the name of 'Tamil Peravai', and a free tuition scheme for Pre-U two students, all the projects being actively pursued.

The Saadhana ‘A Level’ Tuition Project is back again this year!!
Known as the ‘A Level tuition project’, Saadhana is a non - profit project that is conducted by the NUS TLS committee with the support of SINDA. The project has been carried out successfully every year for the past 28 years. The main aim of this programme is to help Indian students excel in their A level examination so as to pursue University education.
Qualified and experienced teachers, small classrooms with limited number of students, free course pack and subsidized fee structure are the key features of Saadhana. Students from other races are welcome to be a part of the Saadhana family as well and depending on the availability, students are offered admission to this programme. The programme is organised from March to October every year.
To improve on the quality and the standard of Saadhana, Saadhana council and a Facebook page have been set up for students to interact and give their feedbacks / suggestions.

Sangae Muzhangu would be another feature event of NUSTLS. This biennial event is our mega variety show that digs deep into the talents of our NUS students. The last Sangae Muzhangu was held on the 20th August 2011 at the University Cultural Centre. This production ties in with one of our primary objectives to promote the Tamil language. SangaeMuzhangu will be a gala of drama, dance and music. Its primary aim however would be to raise funds for our tuition project and the NUSTLS Trust Fund.
